For several planning purposes, terrain models are convenient possibilities for visualisation of a planned infrastructure project as well for professionals as for politicians and the population. In architecture, three-dimensional models where often used to compare different proposals. The building and its interaction with the surrounding environment are in the centre of the interest. But also the influence of planned bridges, retaining walls or dams, roads or railroads can be evaluated.
Several city councils use large scale city models for planning new infrastructure.
