For several planning purposes, terrain models are convenient possibilities to visualise a planned infrastructure project for professionals, politicians and the general public. In architecture, three-dimensional models are often used to compare different proposals. The building and its interaction with its surrounding are the centre of interest. However, the influence of planned bridges, retaining walls or dams, roads or railroads can also be evaluated.

Several city councils use large scale city models for planning new infrastructure.
